Top Food Tech startups to watch in 2024

Research estimates that the global food-system is responsible for a whopping 30% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Not only will food technology play a critical role in reducing this figure by making the sector more sustainable by re-evaluating how the foods we consume are produced, packaged and transported. It will also help to make the industry healthier. Given the U.K is ranked amongst the top five most overweight countries in Europe this will have a powerful impact on the wellbeing of the population. Keep reading for a round up of the ten food tech startups we believe are leading the charge already.

Why we’re excited:
Despite the food sector being the largest industry in the world many suppliers and wholesalers rely on outdated technology to support their operations. We’re all for Orderlion’s ambition to change this as it allows SMEs to improve their business operations and scale more efficiently. Afterall, companies that establish advanced supplier collaboration capabilities tend to beat industry trends by about 2x when it comes to growth.

Too Good To Go

Too Good To Go is on a mission to reduce the problem caused by food waste. Using the app you can rescue unsold food from your favourite local shops and restaurants. All you need to do is log into the app and purchase Surprise Bags for a great price.
Why we’re excited:
When we waste food, we also waste the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. On top of this food that goes to landfill produces greenhouse gas in the form of methane. We also love that you can access food from some of your favourite restaurants, for cheaper whilst helping combat food waste. Win, win, win!

Nourished

Nourished is on a mission to disrupt the nutrition industry. Using ground-breaking 3D-printing technology Nourished combines seven scientifically-backed ingredients to create a single delicious gummy vitamin tailored to your specific mind, body, and goals.
Why we’re excited:
Most gummy vitamins contain up to eight grams of sugar and while it might not seem like a lot it’s almost a third of our daily intake. We love Nourished because their 3D vitamins contain no sugar. We’re also big fans of the fact each product is tailored to meet individual needs, making the supplements more efficient by correcting specific deficiencies, ensuring individuals reach specific health goals.

Better Dairy

Dairy production is currently hugely unsustainable and also highly inefficient. Better Dairy is on a mission to use precision fermentation to produce the same cheeses, yogurts and ice creams consumers currently enjoy without having to use animals.
Why we’re excited:
Dairy animals emit huge amounts of methane, which is roughly 25 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. While Better Dairy may still be in its infancy, we believe the development of dairy-free products that deliver on everything from taste to texture will be key to reversing the years worth of damage to the environment caused by the dairy industry. Plus dairy production can be a cruel process as calves are taken away from their mothers shortly after they are born - something animal lovers will be pleased to see and end to.

It’s also easy to use and a great way to spontaneously explore London’s thriving food and drink scene.

Why we’re excited:
We love plant-based products like Jack & Bry because they produce less pollution than their meaty counterparts. Plus they’re better for our health thanks to the fact they contain more fiber and less fat. And to top it off 70% of jackfruit goes unused so we’re excited to support a business solving two problems at once.

Why we’re excited:
We love that Better Origins converts local food waste into high-quality, sustainable animal feed, removing the need to ship feed around the world while also cutting farmers’ feed costs. Kelpi

Kelpi harnesses the properties of seaweed to create compostable, marine-safe, low-carbon bioplastic food packaging. By replacing fossil fuel-plastics with materials that biodegrade fully, leaving no toxins nor microplastics behind, Kelpi aims to address the problem caused by marine plastic pollution.
Why we’re excited:
Single-use fossil fuel plastics take hundreds of years to decompose which is why we love Kelpi’s mission to create bioplastics using seaweed. In particular we’re excited about Kelpi’s focus on thin films which have the lowest recycling rates of any plastic - just less than 1% is recycled in the UK!
